Huckabee apologizes after pregnancy question Natalie Portman

Washington* . - The Republican Mike Huckabee, former candidate for the presidency in the United States backed down today after he criticized the actress Natalie Portman for being pregnant being single.

Huckabee tried to explain to ABC what he meant to criticize "Natalie Portman or any other Hollywood star who brags" to have children without being married.

The Republican politician spoke to the TV in the country a day after questioning Portman, who recently took an Oscar for her portrayal of a ballerina in Black Swan.

The actress, seven months pregnant, went on stage last week in Los Angeles with the help of her fiance, Benjamin Millepied choreographer, father of the baby. By accepting the prize, Portman said Millepied given the important role of his life, in obvious reference to her impending motherhood.

Huckabee's criticism provoked a storm of condemnation from feminists, who accused the former governor of Arkansas to attack all the hard working single mother and pressing to occupy the traditional role of mothers and wives.

Huckabee is the most popular potential candidates for the presidency by the Republican Party in 2012 with 25 percent support, double that of Sarah Palin.

The Republican said Sunday on ABC that his statements were taken out of context.

"My comments were related to the statistical reality that most single mothers are poor, have a low educational level, can not find work and, if not for government assistance, their children would die of hunger" Huckabee said. "That's the story that we see is a shame that society often glorifies and idealizes the idea of having children out of wedlock" .**
