Cecil Brown, white writers writing black material

Okay, since I was talking about Todd Bridges and John Hughes' inability to write blacks characters, here is a recent article by Cecil Brown on the Counterpunch website, Goodbye, White Friends!
"White People Aren't Into Black People Anymore"

Article mentions Clint Eastwood, Francis Ford Coppola, Morgan Freeman, Robert Altman, Richard Pryor, Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Louis Malle, Sean Connery, Johnny Depp, Heiner Muller, Volker Schlöndorff, Wim Wenders, Peter Aalbæk Jensen, Lars Von Tier and the Dogme bunch, Michael Moore, Bill Cosby, and finally, Melvin Van Peebles.

The article begins with a discussion of blacks with famous white friends who have stopped returning their calls.

Doesn’t it seem strange, even stupid, to expect Clint Eastwood to call you back? I personally would not have him in my address book. Not being that into his films to begin with — not since the movie about Charlie Parker’s life — I could not understand his disappointment. Why would he want to be friends with Clint Eastwood anyway? Clint, he insisted could really play the piano.

I yawned. Give me a break. I interviewed Clint on the set of "Bird," but to get the interview I had to wear a hassid wig and get in line with the extras.

But my friend is different. It just reminded me of the painful reality — many black people have famous white friends who don’t call them back any more.

And discussion on whites writing black characters:

The new black writers are not black, but white women. The novel that’s selling like hot cakes is a book by a white woman called “Helpers.”

When I sent my agent my book on my friend Richard Pryor, she wrote back that nobody’s interested in “Mr. Prior.”(Her spelling and her ignorance.) When she meant that if there is a book by a white guy who never met Richard that would be a book she’s interested in.

I still get return messages from some white friends, though it really doesn’t bother me. I know what the literary agencies are up to, and I know that white authors and playwrights and script writers write all black material. The public is not very discerning these days. Real Black people are not in—white guys writing about blacks are really in.

What is a Jejemon?

Know anyone who types "jejeje" instead of "hehehe"? That's a Jejemon! Usually seen around social networking sites (Facebook, Friendster and Multiply) and texting, jejemons are individuals who are tYpFing LyK diZS jejejeje, making all people viewing their profile raise irritated. Normal people like us must make an effort just to read and understand "jejetyping". Deciphering their text would cause a lot of frustration and hair pulling. And these jejemons are spreading fast.

There has been also stereotyping on Filipinos on the term Jejemon. They say that Jejemons are trying-hard Filipino gangsters and

emos. And sometimes they define Jejemons as poor Filipinos who dress up as 'GaNgZtaHz' and use txt language.

Basically anyone with a low tolerance in correct punctuation, syntax and grammar. Jejemons are usually hated or hunted down to change their grammatical ways. There's even a hate page for jejemons on Facebook called Jejemon Haters and Jejemon Busters. More Jejemon definitions on urbandictionary.com. Jejemons are also featured in a GMA news show.

Who was South Park trying to offend and why?

The thing about "transgressive art"---does it really count as offensive when you're trying to offend people other than those who watch your show? How many devout Muslims watch South Park? I guess some rather fanatical Muslims found out somehow that the South Park fellows portrayed the prophet Mohammad on their show. Hard to imagine they were regular viewers, though.

It seems that a website for a group of al Qaeda sympathizers ran a photo of murdered film director Theo van Gogh (great-great grandnephew of Vincent van Gogh) killed after making an anti-Muslim documentary. The website said that the South Park fellows had acted stupidly and that they might face a similar fate.

South Park's attack on Scientology was intelligent and rather brave. The "Church" of Scientology likes to intimidate critics with lawsuits. Their "religion" is copyrighted and they'll sue you for copyright infringement if you try to discuss their beliefs. It's a "religion" that you have to join, be a member of for years and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to before you're allowed to know its basic tenets.

But the attack on Islam revealed nothing new, it didn't directly attack those who would murder them for making the episode. In fact, unless they are targeted for death, it undermines the episode's message that no one can attack Muhammad for fear of being killed. Other than the website telling them that they were doing something stupid, I'm not sure anyone has been especially upset over the episode even though it's been seen by far more people than the cartoons in Denmark.

Islam is like any other religion.

The Catholics in Northern Ireland are a brutally oppressed people, denied the right to vote, forced to live in ghettos, segregated from the rest of society, denied jobs and government services, brutalized and even routinely tortured by police. They launched a non-violent civil rights movement modeled on the one led by Martin Luther King, Jr, and they were gunned down in the streets, bombed, and put into prison camps. It was then that they turned to armed resistance.

The Catholics in the Republic of Ireland, on the other other hand, are brutal oppressors. You want to know how brutal, look at the scandal now over Catholic clergy's treatment of Irish children in their care. There was a case of a 12-year-old girl, pregnant after being raped at knife-point, who was barred from leaving the country because they were afraid she would get an abortion. (Their supreme court finally let her leave.)

So are you with the Irish Catholics or against them?

Muslims in Palestine are facing extremely violent, brutal oppression. The Zionists target Muslim children. They use starvation, not to mention white phosphorus, as a weapon against the people of Gaza.

On the other hand, governments run by Moslems elsewhere can be rather oppressive themselves.

A critique of South Park I read somewhere

They pointed out that South Park had fallen into a trap. They can whip out an episode very quickly thanks to computer animation. It just takes a few days. They can comment of current events as they happen. And they've been taking more advantage of this lately, but not all the episodes have been especially funny.

Isn't there a book out claiming South Park as a pro-Republican show? It didn't surprise me. The show does that have that slant. They had the gay boy scout episode which ended with the gay scoutmaster quitting so as not to offend the gay hating Boy Scouts. The anti-Mormon episode ended with a pro-Mormon message.

They're awfully mealy-mouthed for "transgressive artists".

Fire at Edsa Shangri-La Mall

Image From www.inquirer.net
Fire at Edsa Shangri-La Mall started about 10:30p.m. Friday in the storage room of Rustan’s Supermarket at the basement. The fire struck a 100 square meter storage room of the supermarket. “The cement walls were six inch thick, and the room was enclosed, so the fire was contained in a small area, but the smoke kept spilling out,” Mandaluyong Fire Marshal Nahum Tarroza told the Inquirer. There were still tenants and customers (mainly moviegoers) in the mall when
the fire struck, and they were evacuated and led outside by mall guards.

As of Saturday, the smoke continued to spread through the upper floors, but fire authorities said that there was no danger of the fire spreading to the upper floors. They had to drill holes at the walls to let the smoke out. The cause of the fire is still unknown and currently under investigation.

Twilight Saga Eclipse Movie Trailer

Next Generation iPhone Leaked

A real iPhone prototype was leaked when an Apple engineer named Gray Powell lost it in a German ales in Redwood City. It was even camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS.  Seeing the pictures, Apple changed a lot in its design. Gizomodo was the one who got the phone and disassembled it.

This is what Gizmodo found out about the leaked iPhone:

What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

More detailed information and images on the next iPhone at Gizmodo.com. If you want to know about how the next generation iPhone was lost by Gray Powell, you can read the article here.

3D Book Technology Developed by South Korean Scientists

Image Via tech.bangladeshio.com
This is just awesome! Its like being in a futuristic movie. But of course you still need to wear those 3D glasses. But did you ever thought that this would become a reality? 3DTV has just recently started to launch and now this. Seeing the wildest animals and creatures popping out of your books and walking around in your book's pages.

South Korean scientists in Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology have developed two story books for children using the 3D technology (Digilog Book Format) that makes
characters literally leap off the page. the two books are the earlier domestic version of digilog book which was made with 3 years of research.

“The Digilog Book is in the final development phase and will become available to the public in the near future,” said, Sang-cheol Kim, head of team responsible for overseeing content development. “It will take a while to market this technology to the general public,” Kim added. [Bangladeshio]

The digilog book or "e-book", allows readers to view content in 3D, in addition to being able to touch and smell the objects. Researchers used this "digilog book" technology to animate two children’s books of Korean folk tales, complete with writhing dragons and heroes bounding over mountains. Watch the sample video below.

Would you want a 3D-TV?

Image Via www.pcworld.com
3D home entertainment brought to your own home. With James Cameron's 3D blockbuster "Avatar" fueling the want for 3D entertainment, 3D TV could be the next big thing in consumer electronics. That's why the electronic companies like sony, samsung, LG and others are pushing 3D-TV this year. Saw an actual Sony Bravia 3D-TV last weekend in Shangri-la Mall in Ortigas, Pasig. They were playing
"Wheel of Fortune" in 3D.  It's great to have your own 3D-TV at home but having a huge price tag and not to mention limited sources of content, I think it would take few more years for 3D-TV to be preferred by consumers.

"Experts agree that 3D TV is still in its early days. What this means for consumers is that there is still too little content, distribution is scarce, and technical kinks on the TVs still need to be worked out." [CNET]

Image Via 3dguy.tv
3D-TV is not only for movies but also offered in gaming. 3D gaming is not as far as we think anymore. 3D-TVs also aimed to attract gamers alike. Sony is really pushing 3D technology just as they did with Blu-ray. In Europe, Sony bundles their new HX803-series Bravia 3DTV with 4 free 3D PS3 games (WipEout HD, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Super Stardust HD and PAIN).

"2010 promises to be the year of 3D TV, and there's no shortage of eye-popping displays on the way."[PCWorld] And maybe not 3DTV alone, but 3D in general. With  Hollywood movies coming out as 3D, 3D games taking huge interest in the gaming world and even 3D books for kids, I can't wait what we would come up next.

Lil Wayne | I'm Single Video Released While In Jail

UPDATE: Lil' Wayne Released From Prison!

How Mike Wallace did it

Okay, here's how 60 Minutes' Mike Wallace got away with his aggressive interviews.

It turns out that what he would do is politely ask all his questions. The interviewee would answer. When they were done, the person would leave. And Mike Wallace and the camera crew would film him asking the same questions again, but this time very aggressively. They would re-shoot those reaction shots of his.

In case you were wondering why so many people put up with his crap all these years.

Now his repellent son is on Fox News.

Wallace's racism

Mike Wallace himself was exposed as a disgusting racist years ago. He was doing a story on crooked banks giving loans to low-income people with the conditions of the loan in tiny print that was impossible to read.

When Wallace thought the mics were off, he said of the Blacks and Hispanics being ripped off, They're hard to read if you're reading it over watermellon or a taco.

In 2004, he was arrested for physically attacking two New York City Taxi and Limousine inspectors because he discovered them talking to his limo driver who was double parked.

Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D Movie Trailer

Kenny Chesney, the biggest ticket-seller of this century in any musical genre, has wrapped his latest concert tour, the Sun City Carnival. This weekend for a limited engagement in movie theaters nationwide, Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D, will give fans the chance to live the fun, the friends, the songs and the moments that make Kenny Chesney the must-see concert experience to kickoff the summer season.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Two competing camps?

Joel, Dr Forester and that guy who preceded TV's Frank

Well, okay, I knew that Mike and two fellows who sound like Crow and Tom Servo have been hard at work. First they were doing commentary on DVDs that would otherwise have no commentary track. They were doing the MST3K thing on various bad movies.

They noted the cruel irony---that in order to play characters forced to watch bad movies, they were actually forced to watch bad movies over and over and over to come up with their wisecracks.

So they started watching better movies. Sort of. Independence Day, the Star Wars movies. They couldn't release DVDs with their commentary on the movies, of course, but they could (and did) record their commentary separately to be played with the movie.

Well, now the other guys are doing the MST3K thing live on stage. Joel, Dr Forester and that guy who used to be on there who I think also did the voice of a robot are appearing live.

Are they in competition? Did Joel and his crowd feel they were being overshadowed by the continuing work of Mike and his bunch?

Well, there's plenty of room for both if you ask me. But I don't know...

I did see a You Tube video sometime ago. A lot of people are doing their own MST3K stuff, doing amusing commentary on bad movies. And I thought some of them were pretty good. They gone uniformly nasty comments from viewers, but that always happens.

The public will only accept people from the original TV series doing that stuff.

It's sort of like a certain works of conceptual art. Like the artist whose "sculpture" consisted of a couple of basketballs in an aquarium. He charged a fortune for it. It's a artwork anybody could create, but it's only authentic when that guy does it and only because he got the idea first.

Viagra for Women?

Image Via www.newsline365.com
A new Viagra(erectile dysfunction drug) is now on the works. Pfizer says that a female version of Viagra is possible. Most attempts to treat female sexual dysfunctions failed, but this new Viagra prototype from Pfizer offers that possibility. Pfizer hopes for a female-specific treatment for those with female sexual arousal disorder, FSAD.

Researchers have already started to test the drug on rabbits and shows
promising results. It can increase blood flow specifically to the genitalia, enhancing and extending the duration of arousal. But the drug would not help all types of female sexual arousal disorder.

"This is the closest thing out there to Viagra for women," says Sheryl Kingsberg, chief of the division of behavioral medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, "but the problem is that a Viagra-like effect will not solve the majority of sexual dysfunction cases in women. "In contrast to men in whom erections have played a huge role in sexual health, for women arousal is not the key problem, desire is," she said.[abcnews]

Flight Cancellations Worldwide: Iceland Volcano Eruption

Image Via news.yahoo.com
An ash cloud from Iceland's spewing volcano halted air traffic across Europe on Thursday April 15. Thousands of flights from European airports have been canceled, stranding tens of thousands of passengers, and officials said it was not clear when it would be safe enough to fly again. The flight cancellations is caused by the cloud of ash thrown up by the eruption of Iceland's volcano.

Iceland's second volcano eruption in less than a month melted part of a glacier and caused heavy flooding on Wednesday, forcing up to 800 people to evacuate and grounding some flights over Norway. According to geophysicist Gunnar Gunnarsson of

Iceland's Meteo Institute, the eruption was in "the southwestern part of Eyjafjallajokull's top crater". [Manila Bulletin]

Airport Delays [flightstats]
Several countries have closed their airspace or are expected to later in the day, including Britain, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Switzerland. This also includes Heathrow airport, Europe's busiest. You can check flight cancellations or delays at Flightstats. Or if you would want to view real time air traffic in Europe visit flightradar24.

Real-Time Air Traffic [flightradar24]
"To clear the ash we either need the volcano to stop belching debris or we need a change in the weather. Unfortunately, we have a high pressure just to the south of Iceland. This one is a 'blocking high', a high pressure that has essentially got stuck, and forces all the other weather to go around it." says Steff Gaulter, Al Jazeera's senior meteorologist. [Aljazeera]

Recent Eearthquakes Caused by HAARP?

Image Via nightwatchmanchronicles.com
H.A.A.R.P. stands for High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program. It has been rumored that this is a "weather machine" that causes major calamities and is been the source and cause of the recent major earthquakes around the globe.

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the US Air Force, the US Navy, the University of Alaska and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).Its purpose is to analyze the ionosphere and investigate the potential for developing ionospheric enhancement technology for radio communications and surveillance purposes (such as missile detection).

Saw this video explaining the conspiracy theories surrounding the HAARP project:

HAARP is the subject of numerous conspiracy theories, with individuals ascribing various hidden motives and capabilities to the project. Journalist Sharon Weinberger said that the popularity of conspiracy theories often overshadows the benefits HAARP may provide to the scientific community. Skeptic computer scientist David Naiditch called HAARP "a magnet for conspiracy theorists", saying the project has been blamed for triggering catastrophes such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan and the Philippines aimed to "shake up" terrorists. [Wikipedia]

According to Naiditch, HAARP is an attractive target for conspiracy theorists because "its purpose seems deeply mysterious to the scientifically uninformed". Conspiracy theorists have also raised the possibility that HAARP may have played a role in the devastating, highly damaging earthquakes that occurred in Sichuan, China in 2008, and Haiti and Chile in 2010. An opinion piece on a Venezuelan state-run television channel's website blamed HAARP as a cause of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. [Wikipedia]

China earthquake kills hundreds in Xinhua

Image Via http://news.bbc.co.uk/
A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck China's Qinghai province early Wednesday at 7:49 a.m. local time. Many people were probably still at home and kids were just about to school.
The USGS also recorded three strong aftershocks all within two hours of the first quake. The aftershocks were of magnitudes 5.8, 5.2 and 5.3.
About 300 people were killed, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported, adding that another 8,000 have been injured. "We have to mainly rely on our hands to clear away the debris as we have no large excavating machines," police officer Shi Huajie told Xinhua. "We have no medical equipment, either."[CNN]
"Soldiers have been dispatched to save the people buried in the collapsed houses," local official Huang Limin was quoted as saying by China's state news agency Xinhua.[BBC]

Maybe conspiracy theorist will again say that this is another doing of HAARP.
